My friendship with Maria started as a serendipitous encounter. At the time I found myself in a very free place, free from assignments, major plans and going with the flow of life. I had resigned my position at a reputable non profit because my creativity was not stimulated enough. So, here I was all ears and open to all the musings life had for me. Little did I know I would meet my muse at a Motown Monday night in Echo Park.
This story is about Maria. Her life as an LA street vendor is not what defines her. This is a five-minute recapitulation of her wisdom as a student of life. The hope is that viewers are able to connect visually and emotionally to the woman on the other side of the lens. She is a mother, 1 out of more than 50,000 street vendors of Los Angeles, a warrior who left civil-war stricken El Salvador for a better life. This video was made before California Gov. Jerry Brown signed the Safe Sidewalk Vending Act, SB 946 which protects vendors from criminalization orders the following:

- California cities cannot ban vending in parks.
- Cities cannot determine where vendors can operate, unless there is a health, safety, or welfare concern.
- Street vendors are no longer required to ask permission from adjacent businesses to operate.
